Q. We have a fantastic Tudor-style home that sits at the back of our beautiful treed lot. We love the look of the house through the trees. However, I am not particularly fond of the colour choices. The white and black seem boring and predictable. I love the big entrance door and would love to paint it a deep red and the trim white. Can you suggest colours? I have considered changing the white to a green or a deep grey but I don’t want to loose the house in the trees. Also, keep in mind that the house sits on a very large hill and from the back view can be seen from far away. I would love the house to have a much more dramatic colour scheme.

A. We agree that you could go bolder in your colour scheme and add much more visual interest to your beautiful home. A red door is very inviting, and would be a dramatic focal point of your exterior. Benjamin Moore’s rich, warm country Redwood E-23 is a good choice. A warm grey siding colour, like Benjamin Moore’s Briarwood E-73 would play off the colour of the roofing system well, and with the trim inside the windows done in Sail cloth E-77, also from Benjamin Moore, the house would blend into your landscape, but won’t be hidden in the trees.

Paint your garage doors the same colour grey as the siding, and the trim off-white. For a little extra zest, paint the accent trim a darker grey, like Benjamin Moore’s Stardust 2108-40. This colour scheme will keep your exterior true to the conventional Tudor style, yet will stylishly update it at the same time.
